Due to different structure alignment rules in the ABI between ia32 and ia64, certain members of the dirent structure are not guaranteed to be 8 byte aligned on ia64. This requires a compat wrapper around these 32 bit system calls. Other architectures may or may not have the problem, depending on the alignment rules. This was observed by running /emul/ia32-linux/bin/ls on 2.6.6 which produces kernel mode unaligned faults.
